- How does additional body weight affect physical status?
Additional body weight significantly affects physical health, elevating the risk of various serious diseases and health conditions. These include hypertension, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke (CVA), gallbladder disease, sleep apnea and certain cancers. The extra weight stresses the body’s systems and can lead to impairments or complications in overall health and well-being, such as what Mark is experiencing (Katzmarzyk et al., 2019).
- What are some of the barriers and challenges to losing weight in the U.S.?
The United States faces multiple barriers and challenges in weight loss efforts. Physiological barriers such as disorders like diabetes can hinder progress. Mechanical barriers, like pain, may limit physical activity. Financial challenges, often experienced by low-income individuals, can restrict access to healthier options and thus end up consuming cheap fast food that is high in calories and less nutritious. Moreover, psychosocial challenges, like depression, can also impact weight loss success (Wolfenden et al., 2019). In Mark’s case, Lack of exercise and eating fast foods have caused a weight gain
- Discuss cultural consideration when discussing weight and weight loss with clients.
Culturally sensitive discussions about weight and weight loss are crucial. Different cultures may hold diverse values and beliefs regarding body weight with some embracing larger body sizes. Understanding cultural food choices is also vital when addressing weight-related concerns with clients (Katzmarzyk et al., 2019). Acknowledging that other cultures may embrace larger body sizes will help focus on overall well-being instead of judging others. Nurses should tailor weight management strategies to align with each client’s culture and food preferences to enhance the client’s willingness to engage in healthier practices, enhance overall health, and achieve the best results.
- What would you suggest to help Mark achieve a healthy weight?
To help Mark achieve a healthy weight, a comprehensive approach is recommended. He should exercise regularly for at least 150 minutes per week. This is because Mark sits in the office for long hours, meaning he is not using up the calories he consumes. Monitoring portion control during meals, opting for healthier food choices such as grilled chicken, fruits, veggies and whole grains and avoiding unhealthy options like fast food and sugary snacks are essential. Staying adequately hydrated can also contribute to his weight management journey (Grodner et al., 2023). Overall, self-dedication and motivation will play a pivotal role in his success. This can help reduce the blood pressure and the par he experiences in his knees.
